3 There is someone who says that even a female firstborn should fast. For behold they were also certainly killed in the plague of the first born in Egypt. And the proof is that it says in the Midrash that Batyah the daughter of Pharaoh was saved in the merit of Moshe. Hence the plague of the first born was also with the females. Nevertheless, this is not the custom, based on the reason that the Holy One, blessed be He, did not command to sanctify them, but rather only the [first born] males. And one who comes after a miscarriage needs to fast, since he is the first born for the inheritance. And likewise first born priests (Kohanim) and Levites need to fast, even though they are not redeemed with the five coins, since they are no worse than the first born of [only] the father (who is also not redeemed but nevertheless fasts). And if there are ten first born [praying together], there is someone who says that the prayer leader should say, anenei (an additional prayer said on a public fast day). But it is not fit to do this. For if so, it is a like public fast, and that is forbidden in Nissan. Rather only the individual [fasting] says, anenei in [the blessing of] shomea tefillah. And we do not read, "Vayechal" (the reading for a public fast).
