15 It further seems to me that in this matter a kezayit or a revi’it is insufficient, for we require a proper portion, as implied by the term “manot,” meaning something significant, like a piece fit to be honored; therefore, those who send small pieces do not fulfill their obligation, and whoever increases in mishloach manot is praiseworthy, since this increases joy, and if one lacks the means to send important items while still retaining something for his own Purim joy, he sends his meal to his fellow and his fellow sends his meal to him, thereby both fulfilling the mitzvah; (and although Rashi implies that with a single sending both fulfill their obligation when they eat together—since this is considered joy of mishloach manot for the second as well, as the Bach explains—Rambam and the other authorities do not accept this view, and it is obvious that what is sent must be fit for immediate eating and drinking, such as roasted or cooked food, whereas if one sends it raw, he has not fulfilled the obligation.)
