Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chayim Siman 619

Siman 619

Presented here for study, not as a practical ruling. The Shulchan Aruch rules by Sephardi custom, the Rema's glosses by Ashkenazi custom, and the Kitzur follows Ashkenazi custom. For a practical question, ask your rabbi.

1 On the night of Yom Kippur it is customary that the Chazzan says, 'In the heavenly court and in the earthly court, with the permission of the Omnipresent and with the permission of the congregation, we permit to pray with sinners.'. And it is customary to say 'Kol Nidre' etc. And after that one says 'Shehecheyanu' without a cup. Rema: And after that they pray the evening service. And it is customary to say Kol Nidrei while it is still daytime, and to continue with singing until nightfall. One says it three times, and each time one raises one's voice more than previously. (Maharil). Similarly the Chazzan says,'And the whole community will be forgiven.' And the community say three times, 'And the Lord said, 'I have forgiven like you said.''. One should not deviate from the local custom even concerning the tunes and piyutim that are said there.
2 On the night of Yom Kippur and the following morning, we say (in the recitation of Shema) "Blessed [is His] Name, Whose glorious kingdom is forever and ever" in a loud voice.
3 If (Yom Kippur) falls out on Shabbos, say "Vayechulu" and the 'Singular Blessing that is like Seven' and conclude (the blessing) "who sanctifies the Shabbos", but do not mention Yom Kippur. Rema: And we do not say "Avinu Malkenu" on Shabbos, but other penitential prayers or supplications we say like the weekday [Rivash Siman 512 and Minhagim.]
4 It is necessary for one to stand to the right of the Prayer Leader and one to the left.
5 There are those that stand on their feet all day and all night.
6 Those accustomed to sleep in the Synagogue and say Songs and Praises all night. Rema: And it is good to sleep a distance from the Aron [Mordechai]. One who does not want to say praises and songs, should not sleep there [Mahariv.] The Cantors that pray all day should not stay up all night because they will lose their voice when they do not sleep [Maharil.]
