2 There are 5 lobes (like ears) in a lung, 3 on the right and 2 on the left from the perspective of the animal hung from its feet and its intestines are towards the butcher; such that the right side of the animal and the right side of the butcher are next to one another. On the right, there is another small lobe called עינוניתא דורדא (rose-like lobe, access lobe) and is not in line with the other lobes, rather is further and close to the middle. If one lobe is missing from the right or left, or if there are 2 to the right and 3 to the left, it is teref. Rema: The figure of the right lobes differ from the figure of the left lobes and if they switch places, the animal is teref. Also, if the middle right lobe is larger than the bottom, the animal is teref. If the upper left lobe is larger than the upper right lobe, the animal is teref. If the right large lobe is larger than the that on the left it is called "switched" and the animal is teref (as per the Maharal of Prague). SHULCHAN ARUCH: If the access lobe is missing, doubled, or on the left, it is kosher. Rema: In these countries there is the custom to taref whether the access lobe has 2, is missing, or in another place. That is what we follow since the majority hold that way and we don't change customs. If it changed from its normal form or shape, it is taref. If there are 2 access lobes with a single bronchus connecting them the size of a finger, even if there is a crack it is kosher. If one is reversed and the second isn't we go according to the larger one. If the larger one is not reversed, it is kosher. The access lobe tends to be in a pocket. If it is not found in a pocket, there are 2 pockets, it is outside of its pocket, when placed inside it pops out when inflating the lung, it is taref. This is only the law in places that taref with 2 or no access lobes, but in places that allow, all of the above are also allowed. If part of the access lobe is missing, check on the left lobe or large lobe. If the missing piece is found there, some say it is kosher since is sometimes found in goats or lambs. Some allow if its base looks like an access lobe and is the thickness of a finger even though the head doesn't look like an access lobe. So long as it is not reversed or changed place. All of the above can be lenient since most allow.

3 If additional lobes were added to their number: if the extra lobe was on the side of the lobes, or on the front of the lung, which is opposite the heart, it is permitted. But if it was on its back, which is opposite the ribs, it is a tereifah. This applies provided that it is the size of a myrtle leaf (aleh hadas) after the lung has been inflated; but if it is less than this, it is valid. Rema: There are those who are stringent to forbid any extra lobe that is not in the normal row of lobes (bederei de’unin) (Ashiri, Mordechai, Smak, Mahari”v, Tur in the name of the Itur, and others), and so is the practice in some places—to forbid an extra lobe even from the front, without distinguishing between front and back, unless it stands in the normal row of lobes. If, when it is inflated, it inclines toward the front, it is valid; if it inclines toward the back, it is a tereifah (Mahari”v; Beit Yosef in the name of M.K.). In these regions, however, the custom is to permit an extra lobe from the front, and the custom should not be changed.

4 If an extra lobe is found at the end of the edge of the main mass (umah), it is valid, for this is considered the normal row of lobes (Beit Yosef).

5 The right lobe adjacent to the windpipe, at the narrow part of the chest right by the neck—the lowest one, which is the uppermost near the neck—if on its back there is something like a myrtle leaf, it is valid, because it is the nature of this lobe to split. This applies only to the right side, not the left. And some say this is only if it is above its midpoint, but below its midpoint it is a tereifah. Rema: Even though we permit an extra lobe when it is in the normal row of lobes, we nevertheless require that there not be more lobes on the left than on the right—for example, four on the left and three on the right (Mahari”v). But if they are equal on each side—three or four lobes—and all stand in the normal row of lobes, it is valid (ibid., in the gloss). If one lobe appears to have a kind of fissure, it combines to permit but not to forbid, for we do not render tereifah due to fissures (so it is found written). A lobe that split and has a single root the thickness of a finger is considered only one lobe (Mahari Molin), and is not called an extra lobe unless it has the form of a lobe. But if on the back of the lung there is a raised place, broad below and thick above, not sharp at its tip, it is called a bump (gabsheushit) and is valid (Mahari”v; Beit Yosef in the name of M.K.). Likewise, if a lobe is found on the back of the lung with a hollow beneath it, and when the lung is inflated the entire lobe falls into the hollow and becomes level with the rest of the lung (R. Jacob Weil; Beit Yosef)—even if it enters the hollow only when one gently places a hand upon it, it is valid. This is not an extra lobe but a splitting of the lung, and since it has a hollow beneath it on which to rest, it is not destined to break off like other extra lobes, and is valid (this is my own reasoning). Such a split should be permitted only on the back, where the split rests on the hollow; but from the front the split falls downward and will eventually break off, and it is a tereifah (so it is found written). There are those who say that if an extra lobe is found opposite the groove of the veredah, its law is like a split over a hollow (Mahari Molin in the name of R. Meir the slaughterer), but one should rely on this only in a case of pressing need and great financial loss.
6 One of the lobes that is smaller than a myrtle leaf after inflation is considered deficient, and the animal is a tereifah.
7 If one of the right lobes is missing, the veredah completes it (and some say it does not complete it) (Rashi, Tosafot, and the Rosh) (and this is the custom).

8 A lung that has no separation of lobes is a tereifah. But if there is a fissure that looks like the normal separation between them, the width of a myrtle leaf—whether at their roots, their middle, or their ends—it is valid. Rema: There are those who permit with a recognizable separation or any fissure whatsoever, even if it is not like a myrtle leaf (Rashi, the Itur, Tosafot, Smag, Rosh, Tur, Rabbeinu Yerucham, Tashbetz, Mordechai in the name of the Geonim, Rabbeinu Chananel, Sefer Dinim, and Raaviyah), and one may rely on them in a case of great loss to permit (the text should read: to permit). The lower right lobe is naturally thicker and longer than the middle lobe, and is also higher than the left. If it is entirely attached to the umah, but the recognizable signs appear in the place where the lobe should be, this is considered a recognizable separation and it is valid (Mahari”v). The same applies if another sign is recognizable there by which the lobe is somewhat discernible—even recognition by means of the bronchial tube (simfon) that normally is found in a lobe: if a simfon is found there in the place where a lobe normally is, this is considered recognition (M.K. in the name of Mahari”k). All these matters are examined and measured after the lung is inflated, since during the animal’s life the lung is inflated. There are those who say that with kids and lambs one should not render tereifah if lobes are not found, even without any recognition or fissure at all, for such is their growth and nature—that in their youth they do not have lobes, and as they grow, the lobes grow with them (old inspections of Mahara”sh).
9 If on one side of the lung one lobe is missing, but at the end of the umah on that side there was a large protrusion like a lobe—even though lobes are normally adjacent to one another and here the umah separates between them—it is valid. Rema: There are those who customarily render tereifah in such a case, because everything below the veredah is considered not in the normal row of lobes, and so is the practice in these regions.
10 All these matters apply only to animals and wild animals; but birds do not have lobe separations like animals, and if such are found, they have no fixed number.
