Siman 352
Presented here for study, not as a practical ruling. The Shulchan Aruch rules by Sephardi custom, the Rema's glosses by Ashkenazi custom, and the Kitzur follows Ashkenazi custom. For a practical question, ask your rabbi.
1 The corpse is not buried in expensive shrouds even [if it is] for the Nasi of Israel.
2 The accepted custom is to bury [the dead] in white garments.
3 A man does not wrap or tie [burial garments] around a woman, but a woman wraps or ties [burial garments] around a man.
4 One closes the eyes of the dead and if his mouth opens one ties up his jaws and stops off the organs of the extremities after they wash him with various kinds of perfumes and cut his hair; Rema: And [ also ] his nails. And one washes him thoroughly all over so that he be clean of all impurity. And one covers his head with eggs beaten [ and mixed with oil or wine ] together with their shell, for [ this resembles ] a sphere making a circuit in the world.
